Electric fireplaces are becoming increasingly popular in Poland. However, those considering purchasing this device wonder whether an electric fireplace consumes a lot of electricity. In this article, we will answer questions regarding how much energy this appliance actually uses and what costs we will incur related to its use. Enjoy the reading!
Does an electric fireplace consume a lot of electricity?
Nowadays, as we search for efficient and eco-friendly sources of heat, electric fireplaces are becoming more popular. Although this type of fireplace is a convenient and aesthetic solution, both in homes and apartments, most people hesitate to purchase it because they are troubled by two basic questions: Does an electric fireplace consume a lot of electricity? Does it also mean high daily electricity consumption? The answer may surprise you – electric fireplaces are usually energy-efficient.
How to check what consumes a lot of electricity?
To find out what consumes a lot of electricity in our home, it's worth looking at individual appliances. Besides the fireplace, electric heaters, coffee machines, televisions, ovens, and even small devices like fan heaters have their place in daily energy consumption. So how do you assess how much electricity an electric heater consumes or how much electricity a coffee machine consumes? The key is to understand their power and usage time.
To find out how much your dryer, refrigerator, or washing machine consumes, you need to look for this information on its nameplate or in the manual. The power of the device will be indicated in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). This information will allow you to easily calculate the cost of usage. This way, you will realize how much you actually pay for the operation of individual devices. You may be surprised to find that, for example, the cost of lighting a home is very low compared to, say, the operation of a washing machine or refrigerator.
Daily electricity consumption – how to calculate it?
To calculate the daily electricity consumption of an electric fireplace (and indeed any electrical device), you should use the formula:
Energy consumption of the device (kWh) = Power (kW) × Time (hours)
Comparison with other devices
Coffee machine
For many of us, daily coffee consumption is almost a ritual. However, do you know how much electricity a coffee machine consumes? A medium-sized home espresso machine consumes 1450 watts. Therefore, an hour of operation costs 1.3 PLN. We can see that this device has high consumption. This results from the fact that espresso machines have a heating element that heats the water, which consumes a lot of electrical energy.
Television
LCD or LED televisions are now an inseparable part of every home. Let's check how much electricity a television consumes. A device with a 55-inch screen diagonal consumes a maximum of 140 watts of energy. Thus, for an hour of viewing, we will pay just 13 groszy!
Oven
The oven is another device that can significantly affect our energy consumption. Is an electric fireplace equally demanding? How much electricity does an oven consume? An oven with an energy class of A+ consumes about 0.9 kWh of energy. This means that for an hour of baking, we will pay 80 groszy.
Fan heater
Now let's take a look at fan heaters, which are often used in cooler months. How much electricity does a fan heater consume compared to an electric fireplace? It may turn out that the fireplace is a more economical solution. Typically, fan heaters have a power of 2 kWh, so an hour of their operation costs you over 2 PLN.
Refrigerator
Undoubtedly, this is the device that consumes the most electricity, as it operates continuously 24 hours a day. The annual consumption of a medium-sized refrigerator is about 300 kWh, which means you will pay about 280 PLN for its operation.
How much electricity does an electric fireplace consume?
Electric fireplaces, due to their modern design, are designed for efficient energy consumption. Does an electric fireplace consume a lot of electricity? A typical electric fireplace consumes the same amount of energy as a traditional light bulb of the same power. Therefore, if you care about saving, this fireplace can be a sensible choice.
Let's take a look at how much electricity an electric fireplace consumes, assuming its power is, for example, 1500 W (1.5 kW), and we use it for 3 hours a day:
1.5 kW × 3 hours = 4.5 kWh
Now that we know how much electricity an electric fireplace consumes in an hour, it's worth calculating how much it will actually cost us. To do this, check your latest electricity bill and look at the unit price of electricity, which is kilowatt-hour (kWh). Currently, the average price of electricity according to the Energy Regulatory Office (URE) is 0.94 PLN/kWh. With this information, you can easily calculate the electricity consumption of the fireplace:
4.5 kWh (energy consumption of the device) x 0.94 = 4.23 PLN.
This is how much you will pay for 3 hours of heating and operation of the electric fireplace from Termofol. Is that a lot? It depends on how you look at it. One must realize that an electric fireplace is not a device we use all the time, but only for a certain period. Therefore, it is certainly not a "power-hungry" device.
It should also be noted that not all fireplaces have a heating option. In the case of devices that serve only decorative functions, the power consumption can be even twice as low. In such cases, the costs are almost illusory.
Monthly and annual electricity consumption
To get a complete picture of the impact of an electric fireplace on your energy consumption, it is worth also analyzing monthly electricity consumption. Multiply the daily consumption (4.5 kWh) by the number of days in a month:
4.5 kWh/day × 30 days/month = 135 kWh/month
Similarly, how much electricity is consumed daily in a home? It depends on many factors, but the electric fireplace may account for only a small percentage of the total consumption.
If you are wondering how much electricity an electric heater consumes compared to an electric fireplace, the differences can be significant. Using the fireplace as an additional source of heat can contribute to reducing annual electricity consumption. One must be aware that besides the heating function, an electric fireplace also serves as decoration. This is also possible with a heater, but the end effect will not be as impressive as with a fireplace. Remember, a heater cannot change the color of the flame or the hearth. However, electric fireplaces have this feature.
Summary
Looking at the electricity consumption of individual household appliances, one might get the impression that they are all energy-efficient. So where do those high electricity bills come from? The hourly cost of operating an electric oven is, as we already know, 80 groszy. If we assume that the oven operates for an average of 2 hours a day, we will pay 1.80 PLN for its operation. Over a week, this will amount to 18 PLN, and monthly – 72 PLN. Still not much, right? But think about it, there are several devices like the oven. When you sum them all up, you will get the average electricity consumption in the house and your (high) bill.
Therefore, answering the question does an electric fireplace consume a lot of electricity, we can state that compared to some other household appliances, these fireplaces are usually energy-efficient.
However, we must remember that efficiency depends on our individual usage. It is worth considering which devices really affect our electricity bills and how we can consciously manage daily energy consumption.
By making informed decisions, we can enjoy the charm of an electric fireplace without worrying about high costs. It is worth remembering that an electric fireplace does not necessarily have to serve a heating function but can simply act as decoration. In that case, its operating costs will drop to almost zero.
