Home Energy Demand — Calculator

When analysing the energy expenses of a typical household, it turns out that as much as 80% of the costs are generated by heating the home and preparing domestic hot water. By comparison, electricity purchases account for around 20–30% of the budget. It's no surprise, then, that more and more people are looking for an ecological yet economical alternative to solid-fuel heating systems, such as electric heating.

The decision to choose electric heating very often goes hand in hand with an investment in renewable energy sources, such as photovoltaic panels, which allow you to become completely independent of grid electricity supply. How can you precisely calculate how much energy electric underfloor heating will use in an apartment? Simply use our home heating calculator!

How to Calculate the Cost of Electric Heating in an Apartment?

The electricity calculator available on this page lets you calculate, with high accuracy, the annual cost of the electricity consumption needed to power underfloor heating. Importantly, the tool takes into account factors such as the usable floor area and the energy class of the building, both individual to each building. The calculations can also factor in a programmable thermostat, which further increases the efficiency of the entire system and helps reduce the running costs of underfloor heating.

Our heating calculator also lets you adjust the price per 1 kWh of energy, depending on changing market rates, individual suppliers’ price lists, or the type of tariff used. This makes it, without doubt, the most accurate electricity cost calculator among the free tools of this kind available online.

Underfloor Heating — Calculator

A very important factor determining the cost of electric heating in a home is also the building’s energy class. It determines how many kilowatts of energy will be needed to heat 1 m² of the home per year. The heating calculator presented here offers as many as 7 different classes. As you might expect, a home without thermal insulation (class E) will generate a significantly higher heating cost than a very well-insulated building (class A). Passive houses show by far the lowest energy demand, thanks to their construction and the solutions used, such as mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.

Electric Underfloor Heating — Running Costs

Let’s use a 100 m² building as a comparison example. The average price per 1 kWh of electricity is PLN 0.6. Depending on the building’s energy class, the total power of the heating installation without a programmable thermostat will be, respectively:

  • 16,500 W for an uninsulated home (class E),
  • 10,500 W for a home with average insulation (class C),
  • 6,000 W for a home with very good insulation (class A).

When calculating the annual heating cost for each of the above cases, the calculator shows amounts of PLN 9,000, PLN 4,800 and PLN 1,200 respectively. Assuming the heating system is additionally equipped with a programmable thermostat, the costs fall respectively to PLN 7,200 (class E), PLN 3,840 (class C) and just PLN 960 for energy class A.

How Does Electric Underfloor Heating Work?

While traditional convector heating heats the air, an electric heating system emits infrared radiation, which heats objects present in the room. This makes it possible to heat objects and people very precisely and evenly, by releasing energy through electromagnetic waves. This technology reduces heat losses caused, among other things, by heated air escaping through the building’s partitions when using traditional radiators.

Advantages of Electric Underfloor Heating

Choosing this kind of heating system has many advantages. The economic value is perfectly illustrated by our home heating cost calculator, which shows the savings that electric underfloor heating offers compared with a traditional central heating installation. However, when investing in electric heating, running costs are not the only benefit. The main advantages of choosing this system include:

  • the ability to install it in every room — including the kitchen and bathroom,
  • compatibility with most commonly used floor coverings: panels, parquet, tiles, stone, etc.,
  • a fully maintenance-free, environmentally friendly heating installation,
  • no radiators — more space saved in rooms,
  • no boiler room needed, and no costs related to equipping one,
  • the ability to connect it to a photovoltaic installation.

Choose an environmentally friendly heating system and see how much you can save by investing in a modern heat source. Use our electric heating calculator and calculate the exact installation and running cost of a heating system in your home today!
